i’m had to move 15 times over the last 20 years and it’s taught me to live with only the bare essentials. i also have legal entitlement to my target country so i’m not sweating the paperwork either.

the only things i’m worried about are the regime change the united states is going to impose on my target country and my pets since they’re the most important things in my life.

if only it were so simple as shops on a sunday and they’re making everywhere homogeneous; this and a handful of other cities are the only unique ones.

i’ve made a list of the things that i care most about where i live and are different from the rest of the country and have decided that i need to have my emigrations plans in motion when the first of them is made illegal.

I was like most Americans doom scrolling things things like r/latestagecapitalism and a r/aboringdystopia because I was aware that things were fucked; like most of us are.

It felt like the fuckery was permanent and that there was nothing I could do but accept that this was reality and try to make the most out of it; filling me w despair about life and leading me to doomscrolling all the time.

Lemmy showed to me in writing that this fuckery was predicted almost 2 centuries ago and that there’s actually very few people perpetuating the fuckery (for their own benefit) and they’ve engineered this system to create the mass false belief that all the fuckery is permanent and that there is nothing we can do about it except push for small, ineffectual changes.

Lemmy, tiktok, and rednote have shown me that people like me are living significantly better lives simply because the ultra rich are not allowed to perpetuate the type of fuckery that was keeping me trapped in a doomscroll loop.

Rednote, in particular, was eye opening for me: I learned from them that most people on that side of the planet assume that life altering medical bills, housing unaffordability, & student loans like mine were nothing more than anti-american propaganda from their governments.

the weeds are the misinformation and if those are getting killed off too; then your problem isn’t misinformation.

and you’ll forever be struggling with it because that type is impossible to distinguish from the other type if you don’t have the right frame of reference to detect it.

your experience with eating and swimming gives you a frame of reference that lets you detect that swimming less than 30 minutes after eating is bullshit, so you’re able to recognize it as the misinformation that it is and having a proper frame of reference like this is the only way to combat any misinformation.

it’s impossible for anyone to have a frame of reference so broad that they can detect all misinformation; not even a group of people can either. becoming something of an expert on the subject of the misinformation is the only thing you can to do help it and, even then, being an expert is relative.

instead, you have to see misinformation as weeds in a mental garden that you will forever have to keep maintaining for your entire life; more weeds will always find their way into your garden and it’s up to you to keep clearing them out so that your flowers can shine through and recognize when the flowers you’ve chosen are the wrong ones for the garden.

i’m convinced that calling it misinformation is part of the problem.

misinformation is the proper word for it, but the word carries with it the connotation that it’s intentional or ill willed; so misinformation that doesn’t seem to have either are given a pass.

for example: take the piece of misinformation that you shouldn’t go swimming 30 minutes after you’ve eaten; it’s misinformation like any other but allowed to perpetuate because it doesn’t seem ill willed or intentional.

that means that any misinformation that seems innocent is allowed to perpetuate and that’s how propaganda takes hold; repeat it enough times and it seems like an established & unquestionable fact and, therefore, innocent, so it flies under the rather and keeps getting perpetuated as fact like the misinformation with swimming & eating

it is getting traction, but people are coalescing one very few fediverse platforms instead of spreading themselves out evenly and that’s effectively re-creating the kind centralization that empowered the enshitification that reddit, twitter, facebook, and (eventually) bluesky experience.

i worked at starbucks during its heyday in the 90’s and it turned me into an espresso snob thanks to the training they used to put their barista through.

they stopped doing that sometime in the 2000’s and now i’m so bougie that starbucks is beneath my standards. lol

i’m the same way with food; i used to make my own tortillas and now everything store bought is beneath my standards too. lol

switching to lemmy has made my social media consumption SIGNIFICANTLY less doomscroll-ey

the part that’s weird to me is that “non-logical” people are always equally non-logical and they’re always the same whether it’s something they care deeply about or not.

they never have to wonder about consolidating. lol

veritassium did a video replicating a FASCINATING study that proves that logical people get dramatically less logical when they encounter facts that contradicts their deeply held beliefs; they get even less logical that “non-logical” people

so they don’t consolidate the 2 sides of themselves; instead they apply their logic to the things that they don’t care much about and get less logical on the subjects/topic that they care more about it.

My parents had a mortgage; car loans; and 4 children at my age, while I struggle to maintain employment and don’t qualify for any type of financing because of it and all this despite having a very high demand skillet in tech; I’m not only doing worse than my parents, but worse than most of my peers.

To be fair: I don’t fit the stereotype of an autistic person so people presume I’m neurotypical and that keeps long term employment out of reach for me.
