Makes me wonder what the instance rules would be for links to public domain torrents in general. I’m so used to the corpo sites just blanket banning all torrents, period.

This got me thinking about Computer Gaming World and how, even if they came back, it probably wouldn’t be the same since they likely would not have any of the same reviewers, editors, etc.

Used to love CGW. One of the few review publications I’ve ever read that actually managed to be objective and not just be based on subjective feelings. Like, I remember one for an RTS and the review author opened by stating they are not personally a fan of RTS games and yet still gave the game a fair (and high scoring) review for its presentation, systems, lack of interfering bugs, etc.

Hehe reminds me of my Hide macro. I would make it bow 3 times and say “Kal Ort Por” before hiding, so people would think I teleported away when being chased by PKers in Felucca. 🤣

IIRC, we first got DSL when I was just leaving junior high. Or maybe when I was a sophomore. I really don’t remember when, but when I was doing most of this downloading, it was on DSL. When we still had dialup, I couldn’t even reliably play UO all weekend (first-world problems, AMR?), because we only had 1 phone line and someone would eventually need the phone.

I made so much money in high school downloading MP3s or anime from Napster/Kazaa/Limewire and burning then to CD/DVD since I was, like, the only kid in town with a computer, access to the internet, and a DVD burner. I remember getting asked how my parents let me get away with it and I was like “my dad is the one who taught me how to do it!” He was always borrowing games or music from co-workers. He got the DVD burner to make copies, since DRM was basically non-existent at the time for a majority of games. S’how we had Quake!

The fediverse is more like the evolution of those old school forums, but diversified into more than just forums. Decentralized, user ran shit that could be a forum, a microblog, a YouTube alternative, a Discord/IRC alternative, an image host, etc. And then they could possibly share content with each other directly, but that’s kinda up to the individual app/site.

Barely any content is created on Reddit. It’s an aggregate site where 90% of the posts are links to other sites, just like Lemmy. Even most of the memes/image macros are unoriginal and taken from somewhere else.

Lemmy is as indexable as Reddit, if not more so.

Every forum I used before Reddit even existed is still active (hell, PHPBB was updated as recently as November!) and new platforms, like Lemmy, pop up all the time . IDK what the fuck these articles are talking about. Maybe they just don’t know how to actually find anything on the web? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I never really liked the microblog ecosystem in general, and some of these terrible design ideas are copied by the Twitter clones, such as how a conversation is presented in a way that is not actually in a chronological order making it hard to tell who is responding to what.

It feels like it wasn’t intended for actual engagement and discussion. It’s made so you can blast your thoughts out into the net and then get the feel good brain chemicals seeing a number next to it go up. We certainly didn’t need an entirely new system for that, since there was already plenty of places to say stupid shit and seek validation.

I up voted this from Lemmy, assuming it was posted from Mastodon so you tell me. (It shows 2 rn on my end)

If all they can get is an IP address I don’t know why they need this ruse or what good it would do. Very few people are going to be coming from an IP that resolves to their actual residency, even if they’re not using VPNs or proxies.

This is a feature available on most apps for Lemmy I’ve tried.

It doesn’t have karma in the sense that there is a publicly displayed total of every post and comment you made so you can point at your profile and be like “look how much karma I have!”

The biggest issue with merging communities is how are rules and moderation handled? There’s no consensus on what the solution to that is.
