In general I think that backlash against algorithms went the wrong way. We poured the baby with the water.
I agree. As long as the microblogging side of the Fediverse has only a chronological feed I can’t see myself engaging with it. Mastodon just demands way too much work from the user for what the payoff is, at least to me.
The F1 season kicked off, so I played around a bit with F1 Manager 2024 since it was free on Epic a few weeks ago. It’s much like the previous iterations of the series - great presentation but vapid and shallow underneath. It’s a real shame, because there are things about it that are compelling. Having all those real team radios and proper circuits and gorgeous cockpit views during races and all the official branding does make a difference. In-race management is also pretty damn fun.
The problem is that it was designed by a team that don’t understand management games. Everything about it starts falling apart the more seasons you play, which is the complete antithesis of what management players are after. The great things like team radios disappear as you replace your drivers and staff members with youngsters or generated people who don’t have voice clips. Nobody has a personality, there are no off-track events that make you invested. The greatness of the perfectly replicated race calendar fades as tracks aren’t added or removed between seasons. There are no interesting regulation changes over time that change fundamental aspects of the car or the rules. The power ranking and properties of the engines never change.
There is no soul or depth here to hook you for years upon years and make you want to build a dynasty. It basically only works if you pick a top or midfield team and try to manage a championship win during the first or second season, beyond that it loses its shine. Still, it’ll be a decent distraction this week as there is no race to watch.
I think mapping existing subreddits to Fediverse equivalents is a great idea and would be very helpful to have as a resource. Sub.Rehab did something to that nature, although I don’t think it’s being maintained anymore sadly.
However there’s a catch to posting to lemmy communities. It’s broken right now if there’s also a user with the same name as a community.
I’ve heard about this before and it sounds highly unfortunate. As I understand it there is no simple fix either.
I’m following it as well! Still waiting on some features for it to be my daily driver, but I love how responsive and active the dev seems to be.

Piefed keeps leading the charge eh? With every new feature added I wish even more that there was a mobile app for it. Well, that or Lemmy devs taking some inspiration and implementing something similar, I guess.

Alternative question - for those that don’t believe this is an issue, when is the last time you came across a post on Lemmy that is specifically for/about women or women’s issues (especially one posted from a woman’s perspective)? Or even better, go ahead and make such a post. Watch how fast the downvotes come.
I’m not going to say it isn’t a problem, but this was just the other day and while engagement could have been better it didn’t seem to be met with downvotes and pushback.
There is no algorithm at all as far as I know, for better or worse. The closest is the “Scaled” sorting option, which takes community size into account to help boost smaller communities. But I’d hardly call that an algorithm, even though it technically is.
There is no point in farming upvotes here apart from feeding your brain’s dopamine response.
Reading this makes me feel slightly better about my obsessive and paranoid habit of keeping unnecessarily extensive backup save slots at milestones through any game I play, despite basically never using them.
I agree, though you’ll probably get a lot of pushback on that from Fediverse enthusiasts since it goes against the idea of the decentralised concept and we should “distribute the users more evenly among instances”. At least that was the way discussion went on this topic back in 2023.
For the moment I feel like lemm.ee is a fairly solid “default” to recommend, though. Few defederations and great admins, very stable amd large enough to have a populated /all but not the massive behemoth that is .world (which I do agree has gotten too large).

There are a lot of Swedish sites using it since “nu” means “now” in Swedish. Feddit.nu is the primary Swedish Lemmy instance since Feddit.se was registered but abandoned.

I don’t think the subs failed to get off the ground because of federation, I think they did because they didn’t have a dedicated person tirelessly filling them with posts and single-handedly carrying them. Because that’s still where we are population wise. 50k+ MAUs is very nice, but not nearly enough for niche subs to be self-sustaining. Look at any small but active Lemmy sub right now and it’s often a single person doing 90% of the posting. The only real way to get a new sub going is to be that person.
At least now we have stuff like Lemmy Federate and places like [email protected] and [email protected] that are both fairly active, so getting a new sub off the ground should be much easier than two years ago.

Make sure to promote your new communities at [email protected] and [email protected] - Lemmy doesn’t have an algorithm so getting off the ground will take some effort. Beware that we’re still at below critical mass for easy sustaining of niche communities, so if you desire for one you will probably have to be the one doing the majority of the posting yourself for a while.

I’ve said before that I genuinely think FarmVille is in with a shout. The trends it started in terms of monetisation, user retention mechanics and analytics driven intrusive big data player behaviour analysis and behaviour prediction was extremely far-reaching, not just in the context of gaming. Not to mention how it got a whole new demographic into video games and showed corporations that games are not necessarily only for gamers. It is very much possible to reach your grandma’s wallet too. It heralded things like Candy Crush.
Mastodon and Lemmy have only limited interoperability. You can’t follow individual users on Lemmy, so most of it is one-way. Mastodon users can post to Lemmy communities by @-ing a specific community, and Lemmy users can then reply as normal and their replies will show up in the Mastodon users feed.
